Break free from the ropes that bind you

An elephant can lift a weight in excess of a ton with its trunk, yet neither chains, nor cages holds an elephant, it’s only a small rope tied to its front leg that does the job. It is obvious that the elephant can, at any time, break away from its bonds, but for some reason, it does not. The reason is that when the elephant is a baby, and much smaller, it is tied to a strong chain and a strong tree. The baby keeps tugging at the chain, in vain. A day comes when it realises that all the tugging and pulling will not help and it gives up, thinking that it cannot break away from the bond. It stops and stands still. But when the baby elephant grows in strength, the rope to which it is tied is relatively weak. The elephant could with one tug, walk away free, but it goes nowhere because it has been conditioned to believe that it cannot break free.

Humans have done amazingly well. The have found ways of exposing and learning new ways of achieving greater levels of freedom. Globalisation and freer press is making it more and more possible for humans across the globe to benefit from breakthroughs experienced by any individual in any part of the world.

There is a great story of a man by the name Darby who had invested a lot of money looking for gold during the gold rush in America. He eventually gave up, sold his equipment, in-order to cut his losses to a junk dealer. The junk dealer consulted a geologist, and the geologist recommended that the junk dealer should dig more, where Darby had given up. The geologist was right, just three feet from where Darby had given up, the junk dealer found the biggest reserve of gold. Darby in the meantime started selling insurance. When Darby found out that the junk dealer had struck gold just three feet from where he had left, he vowed never to give up. He started selling insurance will great zeal, never taking the initial ‘no’ by a prospective client as a permanent ‘no’. With his commitment to persevere, Darby went on to becoming one of the most successful insurance agents in America. Reading the Darby story, many in America went on to achieve great success in their chosen area of work.

Before you taste success, you will surely meet temporary defeat, and perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a person, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what many do. Let us learn from the likes of Darby, move on to break the ropes that we so easily can and achieve better lives.
