Commitment is the key to your success
Lack of success is a result of not committing to learning and improving one’s habits
There are four kinds of individuals cynical, complacent, conceited and committed. We have to ensure that we remain committed at all times. Recently, we were interviewing a 40-year-old candidate for a marketing position in our company. We asked him two questions: what is your weakness and what do you want to be five years from now?
The answer to both questions revealed he was far from being a committed individual. His reply to the first question was, “My weakness is I trust people too soon”. And the second reply, “I want to be a general manager in five years”. A committed mind would have answered as follows: My weakness is my age since I’m 40 and still looking for a job. But I have realised my mistakes and will overcome my limiting habits. I desire to perform better as a marketing professional five years from now.
Repeated failures or lack of successes is a result of not learning and improving ones habits. Individuals who fail to improve are those that become complacent or cynical. They constantly blame others.
Some individuals achieve success but mishandle it. They becomes arrogant and conceited. On the other hand committed people and companies concentrate on continuous improvement. For them achieving targets is not an end, but a means to get better. Like Toyota, the Japanese car company, that works on an anchoring principle pursuing perfection. From a small company in the 1970s, Toyota has emerged into an automobile giant. All because they were committed to constantly improve.
Committed companies or individuals are intrinsically motivated. Improving their work gives them joy. Individuals or companies who are driven by money, fame or recognition, are prone to conceit. If they achieve their targets, they become complacent and if they fail, they get cynical. So if you want to succeed decide to lead committed lives.
